Get Skiing, Get Fit, Get Slim!

Why should you be thinking about donning
your skiing skis?

Well for one, skiing is a good pursuit for
all around exercise.

Skiing is excellent for strengthening the
thigs and toning those large upper-leg muscles
and equally the lower legs and calf muscles get
a good workout regime into the bargain.

Skiing regularly through the season will also
help strengthen the shoulders and back, which
will be good for posture and reduce the
likelihood of minor aches, pains and injuries.

Plus all that twisting and turning and will
help to firm up the abdominals and flatten
your stomach.

Skiing is also a great form of aerobic
exercise with the added bonus that you’ll be
deep breathing that clean. fresh mountain air!

It is estimated that an adult who skis with
moderate effort, will be utilizing between
300 to 500 calories per hour. Which makes the
sport a really effective weight loss tactic -
unless of course you put it all back on via
apres ski indulgence! ;)

But knowing this doesn’t exonerate you from
getting at least fit enough to ski in the first place!

Like skiing skis, ski gloves are an essential part of the kit for anyone planning to make the most of the piste.

It’s not only the elements that threaten your hands when you get onto the slopes. In fact for beginner skiers the hands and wrists are one of the most vulnerable areas and easily prone to injury. Many a new skier has spent more time in the hotel than learning to ski after falling and damaging their wrist on day-one of their skiing vacation!

The History of Skiing

Some notes, for your interest, about the history of skiing to browse, whilst we continue to organize our product lines, collate our catalog and stock our shelves :) Here is a brief synopsis of some interesting historical facts about skiing.

The Britannica Concise Encyclopedia talks about skiing thus:

  • Sport and mode of transportation involving moving over snow on a pair of long flat runners (skis) attached to shoes or boots.
  • Skiing was born in northern Europe; the oldest skis, found in Russia, are some 6,000 years old. The earliest skis were often short and broad.
  • Skis were originally made of a single piece of wood, usually hickory; laminated construction began in the 1930s, plastic running surfaces were introduced in the 1950s, and no wood has been used in the construction of downhill skis for several decades.
  • The first written references to skiing come from the Han dynasty (206 BCAD 220) and describe skiing in northern China.
  • Skiing was used in warfare in Scandinavia from the 13th century or earlier to the 20th century.
