Choosing Skiing Clothing

January 28th, 2009

Some helpful insights about choosing skiing clothing from skiing experts who have put their thoughts on video:

General Skiing Clothing Tips:

There are maybe one or two points in the above video about choosing ski clothes that aren’t adequately explained; such as just what difference is there between 500 and 30000 when it comes to ‘waterpoofness’…indeed what do those figures actually mean?! And what would an average skier in average wet conditions need if buying their first ski gear? We aim to address those questions soon in more detail.

For now though, in addition to the points Dave makes, the video above did attract some useful additional comments in its original YouTube ’slot’ and these were as follows:

When it comes to choosing skiing clothing:

  • NEVER WEAR JEANS (to ski in)!!! besides looking silly, you’ll get cold and wet.
  • Choose a thinner sock, and don’t tuck your longjohns into your boots- they will bunch up and make your shin hurt.
  • NEVER wear two pairs of socks, hoping it will keep your feet warmer. It will actually create pinchpoints and reduce bloodflow, making your feet colder! They will also bunch up with each other, creating painful spots.
